CPNL on a visit to Veolia Polymers
On April 12, CPNL director Marc Spekreijse visited AKR (Aufderhaar Kunststof Recycling) and Veolia Polymers in Vroomshoop. The Veolia facility in Vroomshoop has been active in plastics recycling since 1969 and focuses on the development, production and sale of high-quality compounds based on recycled polypropylene (rPP). Veolia company Aufderhaar Kunststof Recycling grinds and washes PP or HDPE waste into a clean grinding material.
Marc Spekreijse: "At the invitation of Gerrit Klein Nagelvoort, I was shown around both companies. It remains impressive to see with how much passion and professionalism the collected and pre-sorted plastic waste is first ground and washed as a valuable raw material and then processed into high-quality renewed granulate. The process with various quality control steps, supported by an analytical laboratory, produces a very usable stream of specified color and quality variants of PP granulate (rPP). All the sadder it is to see that so much material remains on site and in the warehouses and the plants are running below their capacity because virgin material from outside Europe in particular is several dimes per kilo cheaper and some of the converters' customers seem to be more concerned with their purchasing targets than really contributing to a circular economy and a sustainable world."
Gerrit Klein Nagelvoort: "The quality of this rPP is just as good as virgin plastic, making it a truly sustainable alternative that helps to reduce the carbon footprint. To achieve a good compound, a consistent quality of the grinding material of the recycled plastic is important. The basis for this lies in PP and HDPE sorted bales from consumer packaging or packaging from agriculture and horticulture. By investing in the quality of the washing and grinding line, consumer packaging can be processed in addition to production waste. Here we focus on purchasing sorted plastic waste bales (PP and HDPE) from both pre- and post-sorting."
Staying in touch
CPNL keeps in touch with organizations and companies and follows current developments in the market. We visit companies and knowledge institutions and organize events to help find solutions. Innovative solutions that contribute to the circularity of plastic chains and contribute to CPNL's goal of using grants to accelerate the transition to circularity.
