Thermochemical recycling

The goal of this programme is to improve the quality of thermochemical recycling techniques. One way this will be done is by converting residual streams that otherwise cannot be properly recycled to BTX and to olefins, and by focusing on demos and a showcase.

Scaling up projects

The following is envisioned for scaling up thermochemical recycling:

  • Demo facility for thermal cracking of waste to high-grade aromatics BTX
  • Demo facility for thermal cracking of waste to olefins

Showcase: Recycling mixed plastic waste streams into new raw materials for plastic production

The Circular Plastics NL grant module from RVO covers this program line for 1 showcase in 2023. The awarded projects are expected to be announced in April 2024. Thermochemical recycling processes to date place quite high demands on the quality of the waste to be processed. Practical tests with mixed (and contaminated) waste are still not very successful.

The objective of this topic is to develop and pilot scale realization of a demonstrable scalable thermochemical recycling process, other than gasification, in which mixed plastic waste streams, e.g. DKR350, are recycled into new raw materials for plastic production with higher carbon efficiency than current generation thermochemical processes.
