Circular Plastics NL Workshop: Design & System Integration
Join the conversation about the challenges for circularity and competitiveness in the plastics chain(s).
Circular Plastics NL invites you to an interactive workshop focused on the crucial interplay between system integration and design in the circular economy. With the aim of contributing to the Dutch ambition of 100% circularity by 2050, we explore the complexity of circular product design and its role in achieving sustainability and competitiveness. During the event we will bring together two crucial topics and there will be room for the widest range of views.
Time and Place:
Date: April 18, 2024 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Location: Royal Institute of Engineers (KIVI), Prinsessegracht 23, 2514 AP The Hague
For whom:
- Professionals in the circular (plastics) economy, innovators
- Designers
- Entrepreneurs and business leaders (brand owners, recyclers, converters, polymer producers)
- Policymakers
- Researchers
- Investors
Program:
- 9:30 a.m. Reception by moderator Dirk Koppenol and welcome by Roland ten Klooster and Susanne Waaijers, Circular Plastics NL
- 10:00 Circular Design as a Starting Point? Prof. Roland ten Klooster, Program Manager for Design, Circular Plastics NL
During a short master class by Prof. Roland ten Klooster, knowledge will be shared and insights sought on tools for design processes, specific product-market combinations and ambitious choices for materials and waste strategies. Besides a fully sustainable product life cycle, how do you keep track of revenue models and product marketing? How do you deal with risk management and uncertainties in value chains?
- 10:30 a.m. Case by Louis van den Dobbelsteen, Friesland Campina, Senior Packaging Development Manager
How do you develop circular cheese packaging for cheese slices?
- Different development steps over the years.
- Collaborating with the "entire" supply chain.
- 11:00 a.m. Break
- 11:15 am Results scoping study and discussion by Judith Kessens, Project Manager and Quirine Cohen, Consultant Circular Plastics, TNO
CPNL launched a scoping study with TNO in 2023. This study involves interviews with stakeholders inside and outside the plastics value chains. The goal is to investigate what information is needed to enable the transition to circular plastics. The first results will be presented in an interactive way and feedback can be given by the audience.
- 11:35 Setting the scene for Closing the Loop: Systems Integration by Susanne Waaijers - Van der Loop, Program Manager, Circular Plastics NL.
Susanne will provide insight into aspects of the costs and benefits of circular plastics. Questions that will be addressed and further explored are: What is the current situation? What is your expectation of the UPV's role in education and steering? What are the technological and policy hurdles on the road to 2030? What will it take for companies to continue to invest and innovate?
- 11.45 a.m. Syschemiq: Henk Diepenmaat, professorial fellow at the Maastricht Sustainability Institute (MSI)
Syschemiq focuses on developing a Circular Plastic Economy (CPE) in the trilateral Rhine-Meuse Euroregion (NL, BEL, GER). Companies cannot do this alone: different actors have to contribute and current linear conditions and interdependencies have to be changed into conditions that promote a circular plastic economy. Dual Track Governance (DTG) aims to create an enabling environment for a CPE through the careful design and implementation of coherent packages of governance measures at two levels: cooperation between companies and the broader societal level. The public is invited to make contributions to packages that will benefit CPEs.
- 12:00 PM Q&A Similarities and perspectives Susanne Waaijers - Van der Loop and Henk Diepenmaat
- 12:30 PM Closing Remarks: Is the circular economy turning square? Most seen bottlenecks from the market.
- Lunch until 1:30 p.m.
